Understanding the IP Rating System

      "IP" stands for Ingress Protection. The IP rating system classifies the degree of protection provided by electrical equipment enclosures against the intrusion of foreign objects, such as dust and water. This standard originates from IEC 60529 (International Electrotechnical Commission) and was adopted as a U.S. national standard in 2004.

      Crucially, an IP rating is not solely about waterproofing; it also covers dust resistance. The format is expressed as IPXX, where the two digits represent specific protection levels:

      First Digit: Protection against solid object ingress (dust).

      Second Digit: Protection against liquid ingress (water).

      Higher numbers indicate superior protection. Refer to the breakdown below:

Dust Protection Levels (First Digit)

      0: No protection

      1: Protected against large solid objects

      2: Protected against medium-sized solid objects

      3: Protected against small solid objects

      4: Protected against solid objects larger than 1mm

      5: Protected against harmful dust accumulation

      6: Dust-tight (complete protection against dust ingress)

Water Protection Levels (Second Digit)

      0: No protection

      1: Protected against vertically falling water drops

      2: Protected against water drops falling at up to a 15° angle

      3: Protected against water spray falling at up to a 60° angle

      4: Protected against water splashes from any direction

      5: Protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction

      6: Protected against high-pressure water jets

      7: Protected against temporary immersion (15cm–1m depth for up to 30 minutes)

      8: Protected against continuous immersion under pressure
